Frequently Asked Questions
What type of deviations will be featured?
All deviations in any of the prose categories on deviantART are eligible for features. We will not be featuring poetry at this time. In addition, WordCount also accepts features in any language. Yup, that's right!--prose written in languages other than English is encouraged and featured by this project, as it should be. deviantART is a global community, and WordCount certainly wants to respect that.
Is this a Club? How can I join?
WordCount is not so much a club as it is a community-oriented project. It's our goal to bring more recognition and support to all of the wonderfully-talented prose writers on this site, and we'd appreciate your help to do it!
To "join" or support the project, all you have to do is add us to your list! We'd also appreciate any support in the form of journal features or word-of-mouth, but it's not required. Once you "join", we will expect you to read some (or, ideally, all) of the prose deviations chosen each month, as well as comment and spread the as you see fit, but I promise we won't be checking up on you if you can't get to them.
This project is about exposure and support, so our only goal (or underhanded agenda) is to offer prose more exposure and support on deviantART.
If I join, are you going to flood my watchbox?
At this time, WordCount is considering monthly or bi-monthly journal features and a monthly news article. We do not anticipate featuring the writing directly in our gallery, nor do we expect to have news daily. A such, all you should suffer from us should be the occasional journal entry no more than once a week and no less than once a month. That's not too tedious, is it?
Why haven't you added me to your watch list?
Because WordCount is a project and not a club, the only groups and people on our list are our affiliates and our staff. This simplifies things for all parties involved. So, if you want us to you, you'll have to apply to be staff!
Can I suggest a feature?
Absolutely! WordCount can't do it all alone, so we will be hoping and praying for community involvement in the form of suggestions. Please note all of your suggestions directly to the WordCount account and, where possible, include which WordCount category the prose falls under. If you aren't sure about the word count, however, don't worry: we'll find a way to figure it out!
How do you deal with "Chapters"?
That's a very good question! If you read one particular chapter that you'd like to see featured, we will check to see how many chapters or installments to that particular story have been written. If it's a beginning chapter or installment, we'll probably feature the chapter in whichever "word count" category it falls under. If it is one chapter in a very long or continuous series, we will probably feature it in the 10,000+ "word count" with a link to the very first chapter so that new readers can start at the beginning.
Are there any limits on subject matter?
As long as the piece follows dA's terms of service, it is eligible to be featured. This includes erotic subjects, editorials about subjects you might not agree with, and fan fiction. However, please note: fan fiction is quite prevalent on dA and seems to get quite enough exposure as it is. We will feature fan fiction, but only if the piece is exceptionally well-written and shows something different and unique.
What about journals?
Some deviants write works of art in their journals, and we certainly respect that. This unique style of writing, personal and personable, is certainly something that more people should be exposed to. With that in mind, WordCount is perfectly willing to feature journal entries right alongside our other deviations. They, too, will be placed in the "word count" category they belong in. So if you read a journal that should be a work of art, feel free to send it our way.
I suggested something but didn't see it featured. You suck.
There may be several reasons you haven't seen your suggestion featured yet: one, it might be on a waiting list because our last feature was full; two, we may have decided not to feature it; three, we might have decided to feature it in a themed month or in a journal entry and not in the monthly news article. Please know that we appreciate any and all suggestions that you send our way, but we do reserve the right of the final decision.
I still have questions--!
If you have any additional questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to note the WordCount account. We will try to address all of our notes in a timely manner but also understand that we are only human. You won't be ignored, but it might take us a little while to get back to you.
(This journal is roughly 1,600 words long.)

-END EDIT-
Once again, WordCount (https://www.deviantart.com/wordcount) is entering a new staff cycle, and we would like to place an open call for applications!
Currently, we have openings in three Fiction categories and all Nonfiction categories. While we understand that fictional prose tends to be more popular, it's about time that nonfiction had some fair representation!
Of course, if you're interested in any of the open categories, don't hesitate to send an application our way.

I like good prose, even though i'm a poetry guy, myself.
